MOTIVATIONAL INTERVIEWING:
INTRODUCTION & INTEGRATION

Practitioner Workshop

Stephen Rollnick

Two-day workshop in Cardiff, Wales:
9th & 10th October 2006
The workshop:
This motivational interviewing (MI) workshop will use a newly developed model for helping practitioners integrate MI into everyday practice. It is based on the value of shifting between directing and guiding styles. MI is seen as a refinement of a guiding style, something used naturally in everyday life and professional practice to promote learning and behaviour change. The workshop is particularly suited to practitioners who, in their everyday practice, have other priorities besides encouraging behaviour change.

Participants will be given the opportunity to:
  • Learn about and practice switching between directing and guiding styles.
  • Practice the use of a guiding style for encouraging behaviour change.
  • Learn about and practice the more refined skills of MI. This includes particularly the use of reflective listening to elicit change talk.
  • Learn about and practice the use of instruction in the service of MI and a guiding style, including doing this briefly in just a few minutes.
  • Consider the special integration challenges posed in their everyday work environment.
  • Join an internet discussion forum designed to promote learning after the workshop and to access new developments in the field.
Open to all practitioners in health and social care settings, this workshop will be of interest to both newcomers and those more familiar with motivational interviewing. Stephen Rollnick is a clinical psychologist who has many years of experience of training practitioners, and is the co-author (with William R. Miller) of Motivational Interviewing: Preparing People for Change and Health Behaviour Change: A Guide for Practitioners (with Pip Mason and Chris Butler). He may be accompanied by a colleague for this workshop, particularly if the numbers attending require additional trainer support.
