Should an MI trainer be competent in the method itself?

My personal feeling is that one should not really use a trainer unless that person has competence in the method itself. It is possible to teach others about MI, and this might be done quite well by someone who is not proficient in the method, but when it comes to training others in how to actually do it, competence in the method seems to be essential.
