I am a dental hygienist and in the last three years have become qualified in hypno/psychotherapy, I am now in my 2nd year of a counselling diploma. I have been practicing MI techniques for a few years in surgery, and am an NLP practioner aswell. Behavior change and language are inseperable.
Having attended talks on MI in dentistry and felt the reaction from my colleagues I am drawn to believe that training and delivering the concept of MI in dentistry requires a certain amount of attention to ambivelance in the receiving group aswell as thier patients! I am looking to talk on MI and would love to know how I go about resourcing and preparing to do this, how do we engender change in the agents of change? Is there any one out there that has worked through delivery of this subject with the same thing in mind?
I am passionate about getting this right, though there are some who are aware and working in this way, it is so often lost potential in a profession that shouts about prevention, and behavior change is at the heart of preventative healthcare. Lying a patient back then asking them about there mouths, mask up, gloves on and instruments in hand does not constitute good listening skills in my book.
Any advice or direction would be welcome Regards Bobby Keeling |
